China's Figure Skaters Face Probe After Displaying Toy Missile during Event
ISU officials are conducting an investigation following two Chinese figure skaters appeared holding an object resembling a replica weapon during a grand prix figure skating event.
Broadcast footage showed the skaters sitting alongside a large toy in the form of a missile labeled “DF-61” as they awaited their scores at the “kiss and cry” zone on Saturday.
The DF-61 is a recently introduced China-produced land-based intercontinental ballistic missile capable of transporting atomic warheads, which was displayed at a military parade recently.
Officials is aware that an inappropriate plush item seems to have been one of the objects tossed onto the ice by spectators following a performance during the competition,” the ISU stated in an emailed statement.
The item was then held by the athletes who had just performed. The ISU apologizes for the incident and will investigate further.”
The duo placed eighth of 10 pairs in the ice dance event, which was won by the American pair from the US.
