Courageous Train Employee Suffers Severe Injuries During Multiple Stabbing Attack on High-Speed Train
A courageous railway employee who intervened to save travelers during a multiple stabbing incident on a high-speed train has suffered life-threatening injuries, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Frightening Event
CCTV video reportedly shows the staff member trying to stop the assailant as the train journeyed between a city and Huntingdon in the county. Witnesses recounted a frightening 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied passengers running through carriages.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for interrogation. Authorities announced a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Crisis Response and Aftermath
The incident on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five people have since been released from medical care.
A witness recorded the suspect brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced police on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – especially the courageous member of train personnel whose relatives are being supported by trained personnel,” said a high-ranking law enforcement official.
Union Response and Appeals for Action
Train associations were quick to praise employees and demand more action. One labor leader said he would be “seeking urgent meetings with government, rail employers and police to guarantee that we have the strongest available support, resources and effective protocols in place”.
Another union leader encouraged the train operator and government “to act quickly to examine security, to help the impacted employees, and to make sure nothing like this happens again”.
Driver Commended for Quick Thinking
The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been praised by association officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“He didn’t stop the train in the middle of two stops where it’s obviously difficult for the emergency services to access, but he carried on going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost waiting,” explained a association official.
Further Details
Authorities stated they received the initial distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One witness recounted at first thinking if the situation was a Halloween prank, but soon realized from people's faces that it was serious.
Authorities have confirmed there is no evidence to indicate the incident was a terrorist attack and have asked the community to provide with any further details.
Train operations on the impacted route are expected to have disruption until Monday, with travelers advised to defer their journeys where possible.
