{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces near miss with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials ran across the track immediately ahead of his car
The concerning event happened on the third circuit when track officials were observed on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
Track Safety Questioned
"Clearly there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be authorized to just run across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"
Official Investigation Underway
F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the governing body
"On lap three, marshals were notified and placed on standby to enter the track and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was displayed in that area"
"Our inquiry continues what happened following that moment"
