Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation Chief James Comey Enters Denial Plea to Charges of Falsehoods Congress
Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to US legislators and impeding a lawmaking procedure.
The former director's attorney submitted the plea on his behalf in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
The defense lawyer stated he would attempt to have the legal matter terminated for several reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of former President Trump, was being singled out.
Mr Comey was indicted soon after the former president pushed his attorney general to move forward against him.
Legal Proceedings
At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative advised the magistrate they intended to present various legal requests to dismiss the case before a trial, claiming the prosecution was spiteful and that a US attorney was wrongfully assigned to handle the proceedings.
Mr Comey's proceedings was first managed by Erik Siebert, who left his position under pressure from Trump after his probe into another political adversary - the New York official - failed to bring criminal charges.
Courtroom Atmosphere
Mr Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and making jokes. He was supported by his wife, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration recently fired.
Upon hearing to the judge recite his legal protections and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, the defendant was asked if he comprehended the charges.
"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he told the court.
Background Context
James Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was terminated about four months into Trump's initial presidency as president. At the time, Mr Comey was leading an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Moscow and Trump's campaign.
During his tenure, the director sparked a counter-response from the Democratic party when he stated just days before the 2016 election that he was examining Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against Clinton were never brought, causing criticism from Republicans as well.
Current Allegations
The federal government claim the former director lied to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he deceived the legislative body by stating he had not authorized a person at the FBI to release to news outlets data about the government examinations.
Government lawyers also accuse Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to influence, obstruct and delay" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.
Personal Comments
Via social media James Comey shared to his online platform after he was indicted, he declared he was innocent and alleged Donald Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".
"Our household have been aware for years that there are consequences to standing up to Donald Trump," he commented. "We will not live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Therefore proceed with a trial."
These allegations against Mr Comey surfaced after Donald Trump shared on online platforms demanding his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, charge the former director and additional individuals.
